Bread is a Winner

Article by Samantha Weston ‘25

What do you want out of your food? Versatility? Fulfillment? Deliciousness? Well, I have news for you! Bread conquers all these qualities. Nothing is better than a beautiful, warm, golden, and crispy loaf of bread. As mentioned in the new hit movie, The Menu, “Bread has existed in some form [especially amongst the poor] for over 12,000 years, Flour and water–What could be simpler? Even today, grain represents 65% of all agriculture” (Mylod). The world would be nothing without bread.

Bread is cost-efficient. Bread has always been a big hit for poverty-stricken families. Bread is less expensive than dairy and meat, and that says a lot considering this economy! One can purchase the delectable treat and still afford something to go with it.

Bread helps create endless meals. You can make a range of dishes with bread. It could be something simple such as toast, a flavorful sandwich, french toast, or peanut butter and jelly. Some people even take it up a level and make banana bread, pumpkin bread, and bread puddings!

Bread has nutritional benefits. Bread is plentiful in complex carbohydrates. Most types contain calcium and iron, fiber and folate, and magnesium. Calcium is good for maintaining healthy bones, while magnesium supports muscles and nerve function. Iron is needed to transport oxygen and folate is desired for the formation of red blood cells. Lastly, fiber helps regulate the body’s use of sugars.

Bread is a staple in this world! I love it! And I am positive that if you decide to enjoy bread, your mental health will improve. It’s cathartic. Till next time, TheTheresian readers! And remember: Live, laugh, and love bread.
