May’s club of the month is Little Flours. Little Flours is Little Flower’s cooking club, moderated by no other than our favorite chemistry teacher, Ms. Dauerbach!
During COVID, Ms. Dauerbach was asked to create an online cooking club. Members created a shared Google Doc, where they would post all of their recipes or ideas! They began to talk about actual meetings and cooking if they returned to school; however, COVID prevented this from happening. These girls all graduated now, but Ms. Dauerbach has made sure to continue on with their legacy!
The Little Flours started back up in September, when Ms. Dauerbach asked two of her Chemistry 1 classes if any of them would be interested in joining. All current members are girls who responded. Ms. Dauerbach prefers a small group, because she has to supervise students using sharp knives, boiling water, and hot oil. French Toast and bacon were the club’s first effort this year!
The Little Flours meet once a week, after school on Thursdays, for about an hour and fifteen minutes. They cook diligently, making sure to stay cooperative and attentive, throughout every meeting. “I would love to run this club again,” exclaimed Ms. Dauerbach when asked if she would like to continue hosting this club next year. She is even thinking about adding a few new members next year, and rotating between two groups each week.
Little Flower’s Little Flours cooking club is not only fun, but it also teaches students how to handle cooking on their own, presents new food recipes and various ways to cook, and it boosts students’ interaction skills with cooking materials, as well as enhances their organization skills. The Little Flours love their club, and for all of their hard work, they are always paid off by consuming a delicious treat at the end of their cooking sessions!
